IDEAS FOR YOUR COASTAL STAY
Dog-Friendly Beaches in Scarborough: Plan Your Stay
Bringing the dogs to Scarborough? The important detail is which part of the beach you visit, as well as the time of year. Use the council’s current map and signs on arrival, rather than assuming an entire bay is open or closed to dogs.

Check the seasonal restrictions first
North Yorkshire Council identifies seasonal dog-control areas in parts of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby between 1 May and 30 September. These apply to designated areas, so a general statement that a beach is “dog friendly” is not enough to plan a visit.
Before travelling, open the council guidance and boundary map. On arrival, follow the local signs and any other applicable rules. Outside the seasonal dates, check the current information too; a change in season does not remove every rule about dog control.
South Bay: choose your stretch before setting off
South Bay is a useful starting point for a traditional seaside day, with the harbour and promenade nearby. Visit North Yorkshire notes seasonal restrictions on the main bathing areas, with dog-friendly stretches elsewhere.
Its dog-friendly beach guide points visitors towards the area from the slipway leading towards Scarborough Spa and beyond. Treat that as planning guidance, then check the council boundary map and the signs for the exact stretch you intend to use. Keep your plans flexible if conditions or access are unsuitable.
North Bay: check the map for the right section
The tourism guide also identifies dog-friendly areas around North Bay, including stretches below Royal Albert Drive and near SEA LIFE. The main bathing areas have seasonal restrictions, so don’t assume that access at one point tells you the rules for the whole bay.
Pick a meeting point before your group splits up. Some guests may want a beach walk while others stay on the promenade or head for a café. Check individual venues’ pet policies rather than assuming every nearby business accepts dogs.
Plan around the tide and your dog’s needs
Check tide times and the weather before leaving. Bring water, a lead and waste bags, and choose a route you can shorten if your dog or another member of the group needs a break. An enclosed garden at your accommodation is useful, but it does not replace supervision or an appropriate walk.
For a mixed-age group, agree who is taking the dogs and how everyone will meet up again. Leave room in the day for cleaning sandy paws and drying off before settling back into the house.
Staying with dogs at Royal Victoria House
Royal Victoria House welcomes up to two well-behaved dogs, downstairs only. The house has an enclosed garden, sleeps up to fifteen guests and has seven bedrooms. Tell us about the dogs when you enquire so we can confirm the arrangements for your stay.
The house is over four floors, with bedrooms upstairs. Consider how the downstairs-only dog policy will work for your group before booking. Please ask about any particular needs rather than relying on a general dog-friendly label.
